The Alfred Cunningham drawbridge into downtown New
Bern closed in the "open" position this past May, giving
boaters docked at the two marinas easier access to the Neuse but
making it more difficult for those driving to the historic district.
Construction of the $39 million replacement bridge is expected
to take 2 1/2 years and should be finished by November of 2009.
Until then motorists are urged to take the Dr. M.L. King Jr. Boulevard
exit or Pembroke Road ramp.
